Five honest answers about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, your first class, and how MOBJJ runs the room. Have a question we don't cover? Call (704) 360-0159 — a real person answers.
BJJ is a grappling martial art. It emphasizes getting the fight to the ground, controlling the individual(s), and performing a fight-ending submission — typically through a choke or joint lock. There are no punches, kicks, knees, or elbows.
That control-based system makes it the most effective real-world self-defense art for most people, and it's also one of the safest combat sports to train regularly because there's no striking involved.
Walking into any new gym is stressful and intimidating. Rest assured we have a proven system to make sure anyone feels comfortable after a few minutes. You'll go through a light warm-up, be partnered with a seasoned practitioner, and practice several new moves.
This is hands-on instruction. You will never be asked to do anything you aren't comfortable with. Show up 10 minutes early, an instructor greets you and walks you through everything.
Comfortable shorts with no zipper or rivets, plus a clean T-shirt or rash guard. Grappling shorts (like board shorts without pockets) are ideal but not required for your first class.
Once you decide to keep training, you'll want a Gi (uniform) for Gi classes and a rash guard + grappling shorts for No-Gi. See our dress code page for everything.
The short answer is no. Everyone finds their way to us for different reasons, and in that spirit, some people simply might not want to train live. We want people to work to their comfort level.
More than likely you'll eventually want to — and that's the beauty of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The art reveals itself slowly, and "live" training is where it really clicks. But there's no pressure.
Our youngest program starts at age 5. The Kids 5-7 class focuses on coordination, focus, basic self-defense, and teamwork in a playful, nurturing environment. The Kids 8-12 class moves into real techniques, fitness, and discipline.
Both kids classes have full black belt instruction — no part-time youth coaches.
